How a space painting is built, layer by layer

Every Fourth ends under a night sky, and every painting of one starts the same way: with the physics decided before the first brush stroke.

A space painting in Photoshop is built in a fixed order, and the order is not a matter of taste: the star field, then the nebula, then the planet, then the surface that receives their light, and only then the glow and falloff that tie the layers together. Each layer needs to know where the light comes from, so the physics is settled before the first object is drawn. This note walks that order, with the reminders about real light that painters skip and then repaint.

What follows is the same order, read for a magazine that spends one night a year watching real light work in a real sky.

Light first, objects second

Before anything is drawn, the painting needs a decision: where the light comes from, how strong it is, and what color it carries. Every later layer is a surface answering that decision. A planet lit from the right cannot borrow a shadow painted for light from the left; a nebula that emits its own glow cannot sit in a sky lit by a sun the painter forgot to place. The physics reminder is simple enough to tape to the monitor: light travels in straight lines, it weakens with distance, and it bounces. A painting that respects those three facts reads as real even when the scene is invented.

The star field

Stars go first because they are the background everything else occludes. The craft is in restraint: a convincing field mixes sizes and brightnesses without pattern, keeps most stars small and dim, and remembers that a few carry a slight color temperature, warm or cool, rather than sitting at flat white. A random scatter brush over black looks like noise; a scatter laid in two or three densities, with the brightest dozen stars placed by hand, looks like depth.

Nebula and planet

The nebula is the one layer that emits rather than reflects: its light is made of gas that glows, so its edges can stay soft and its core can carry the brightest value in the sky. The planet is the opposite case, a sphere lit by the sun the painter chose earlier: the lit limb faces the source, the far side falls into shadow, and the shadow edge, the terminator, is where the surface detail lives. The tradition behind all of this is older than the software: space art as a genre predates Photoshop by a century, and the early practitioners argued about the same light.

Surface and the fall of light

A foreground surface is what makes the sky a place rather than a wallpaper. It receives the light of everything above it: the sun's direct light on one side, the planet's reflected light on the other, and the sky's faint glow in the shadows. Emission and falloff do the last work. Anything that glows, a vent, a lamp, a lit window, emits into a falloff that fades with distance, and that fading rim is what convinces the eye the light is in the scene rather than on it.

The decision

If the painting must be simplified, simplify the objects, never the light. Decide the source before the first stroke, build the layers in the order the light travels, and let the surface answer the sky. The same logic governs the real show over Fairmount Park: the burst is the source, the smoke is the nebula, the treetops are the surface, and the order is not negotiable.
