Section 06 · Safety & Permits

Safety and permits for the Fourth in Pennsylvania

Safety and permits for the Fourth: fireworks safety, what Pennsylvania law allows at home, the 150 foot rule, municipal permits and heat sense.

Bucket of water and a garden hose coiled on a driveway beside a packet of sparklers well away from the house wall

Since Pennsylvania loosened its consumer fireworks law in 2017, the backyard show has become a county wide fact, and so has the paperwork and the risk that ride along with it. This section translates the rules into plain English: what a resident may legally light, the 150 foot distance from occupied structures, the municipal permit path for anything bigger, and the boring habits, water buckets, cleared ground, sober operators, that prevent almost every yard incident there is.

We are deliberately unromantic here. The rest of the magazine celebrates the noise; this section keeps the noise legal, survivable and neighborly. Read the law piece before you buy anything that flies, and check your own borough's current rules, because municipalities adjust theirs and the final word is always local.

In this section

  1. Borough office counter with printed permit forms, a measuring tape and a pen beside a window looking onto a quiet main street

Permits and the 150 foot rule, plainly

The boring page that prevents the expensive evening: which shows need a permit, how the 150 foot rule plays on real county lots, and what to ask the borough office.

  2. Safety setup on a wide driveway with a bucket of water, a charged garden hose and a cleared patch of ground far from the house

Fireworks safety and the Pennsylvania law

Since Pennsylvania loosened its fireworks law, the backyard show is a countywide fact. What the law allows, what it forbids, and the habits that prevent almost every yard incident.

The pieces of this section feed the day planned in the complete Fourth of July guide, and two neighbouring sections extend it: Parade Guide and Fireworks Schedule.
